Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD/NASH) or (MAFLD/MASH)

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the accumulation of excess fat in the liver in people who drink little or no alcohol. It is now the most common liver disease in the United States, affecting an estimated 80–100 million Americans. NAFLD exists on a spectrum: simple fatty liver (steatosis) at one end, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) — characterized by liver inflammation and cell damage — at the other. NASH can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure.

Risk Factors

  • Obesity or overweight (BMI > 25)

  • Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance

  • High triglycerides or low HDL cholesterol

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Metabolic syndrome

Symptoms

Most patients with NAFLD have no symptoms, which is why it is often discovered incidentally through abnormal liver function tests or imaging. Some patients with more advanced disease may experience fatigue or discomfort in the upper right abdomen.

FibroScan - Non Invasive Liver Assessment

Advanced Gastroenterology Group offers FibroScan — a painless, non-invasive ultrasound-based test that measures liver stiffness (fibrosis) and fat content. FibroScan allows our physicians to assess liver disease severity without a liver biopsy in most cases. The test takes approximately 10 minutes and is performed in our office.

Diagnosing IBS

IBS is a clinical diagnosis based on the Rome IV criteria. However, our physicians rule out other conditions that can mimic IBS before confirming the diagnosis. Testing may include blood work (CBC, CMP, thyroid, celiac antibodies), stool tests, and hydrogen breath testing for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) — a condition that frequently co-occurs with IBS. Colonoscopy may be recommended in patients over 45 or those with alarm features.

Our Structured NAFLD Program

We offer a medically guided NAFLD program that includes: physician assessment and individualized treatment planning, certified nutritionist telehealth consultations through our Sylvan Health partnership (often covered by insurance), dietary and exercise guidance targeting 10% body weight loss, GLP-1 medication support for eligible patients, and regular monitoring with bloodwork and follow-up FibroScan. The 6-month program is designed for sustained, safe weight loss with close physician oversight.
