Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an advanced procedure combining endoscopy with high-frequency ultrasound imaging to produce detailed pictures of the digestive tract wall and nearby organs — including the pancreas, bile ducts, liver, and lymph nodes. It provides significantly better resolution than external (transabdominal) ultrasound for evaluating these structures.

When is EUS Used?

-
Evaluation and staging of pancreatic masses and cysts
-
Detection of bile duct stones not seen on other imaging
-
Staging of esophageal, gastric, and rectal cancers
-
Evaluation of submucosal lesions in the GI tract
-
Guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) biopsy of lymph nodes or masses
-
Evaluation of chronic pancreatitis
