Capsule endoscopy uses a small, disposable pill-sized camera that you swallow. As it travels naturally through your digestive tract, it captures thousands of images of the small intestine — an area that cannot be reached by standard upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. The camera transmits images wirelessly to a recording device worn on a belt. After 8 hours, you return the device to our office; your physician then reviews the images.

When is Capsule Endoscopy Used?

-
Evaluation of obscure GI bleeding not explained by colonoscopy or upper endoscopy
-
Diagnosis and assessment of Crohn's disease affecting the small bowel
-
Follow-up of known small bowel Crohn's disease
-
Evaluation of suspected celiac disease or refractory celiac disease
-
Detection of small bowel tumors or polyps

What to Expect

The procedure requires bowel preparation the night before. On the day of the procedure, you swallow the capsule at our office and then go about your normal activities for approximately 8 hours while the device records. The capsule is naturally excreted. You should not undergo MRI imaging while the capsule is in your body.
