An upper endoscopy — also called an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) — is a procedure in which a gastroenterologist uses a thin, flexible lighted camera to examine the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It is performed under IV sedation and takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

When is Upper Endoscopy Recommended?

  • Persistent GERD or heartburn not responding to medication

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or painful swallowing

  • Unexplained nausea, vomiting, or early satiety

  • Upper abdominal pain — to evaluate for ulcers, gastritis, or H. pylori

  • Suspected celiac disease — biopsy of the duodenum for diagnosis

  • Evaluation and surveillance of Barrett's esophagus

  • Iron deficiency anemia — to check for occult upper GI bleeding

  • Screening in patients with chronic GERD for Barrett's esophagus

Who Should Have a Colonoscopy?

  • All adults beginning at age 45 (average risk)

  • Earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps

  • Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (surveillance colonoscopy)

  • Anyone with rectal bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, or unexplained weight loss

  • Patients overdue for their 10-year follow-up

What Can Be Done During an Upper Endoscopy?

Upper endoscopy is both diagnostic and therapeutic. In addition to direct visualization, your physician can take biopsies, dilate esophageal strictures, treat bleeding lesions, remove polyps, and place feeding tubes. Most procedures require no recovery beyond the day of the procedure.
