FibroScan (transient elastography) is a non-invasive, painless test that measures liver stiffness (fibrosis) and liver fat content using ultrasound-based technology. It takes approximately 10 minutes, requires no needles or sedation, and provides immediate results. FibroScan allows physicians to assess the severity of liver disease without the need for a liver biopsy in most cases.
Who Benefits from FibroScan?
-
Patients with NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) or NASH
-
Patients with chronic hepatitis B or C being monitored for fibrosis progression
-
Patients with alcohol-related liver disease
-
Patients with elevated liver enzymes of unclear cause
-
Monitoring response to treatment in fatty liver disease
What FibroScan Measures
FibroScan provides two key measurements: liver stiffness (a marker of fibrosis, measured in kilopascals) and the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), which reflects liver fat content. Results are interpreted in the context of your clinical history, blood tests, and imaging.
FibroScan vs Liver Biopsy
Liver biopsy is the traditional gold standard for staging liver fibrosis but is invasive, carries risks, and samples only a small portion of the liver. FibroScan is highly accurate for staging significant fibrosis and cirrhosis and is now recommended as a first-line assessment tool in most patients with chronic liver disease. In many cases, it eliminates the need for biopsy entirely.
