Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an advanced endoscopic procedure that combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray) to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreatic duct. ERCP is performed by fellowship-trained endoscopists with subspecialty expertise — not all gastroenterologists perform this procedure.

When is ERCP Recommended?

-
Removal of bile duct stones (choledocholithiasis)
-
Treatment of bile duct strictures — benign or malignant
-
Placement of biliary stents for obstruction from pancreatic cancer or cholangiocarcinoma
-
Evaluation and treatment of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)
-
Pancreatitis related to bile duct stones
-
Evaluation of chronic pancreatitis with pancreatic duct complications
