Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening and prevention. It is the only screening test that can both detect and remove precancerous polyps in a single procedure, potentially stopping colon cancer before it ever develops. Advanced Gastroenterology Group performs colonoscopies at our dedicated endoscopy center in Mountainside and at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a 20–30 minute outpatient procedure in which a gastroenterologist uses a thin, flexible camera (colonoscope) to inspect the entire inner lining of the colon. You receive intravenous sedation and are comfortably asleep throughout. Any polyps found are removed immediately during the same procedure — no second visit needed.

Who Should Have a Colonoscopy?

-
All adults beginning at age 45 (average risk)
-
Earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer or polyps
-
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (surveillance colonoscopy)
-
Anyone with rectal bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, or unexplained weight loss
-
Patients overdue for their 10-year follow-up

Insurance Coverage

Preventive colonoscopy for average-risk patients is covered at 100% — no copay, no deductible — under the ACA for most commercial insurance plans and Medicare. We verify your benefits before your procedure.

The Bowel Prep

The prep involves a clear liquid diet the day before and drinking a bowel-cleansing solution to completely empty the colon. Modern prep formulations are significantly more tolerable than older versions. Detailed instructions are provided when you schedule.

Adenoma Detection Rate

Our gastroenterologists maintain above-benchmark adenoma detection rates (ADR) — a key quality measure that directly correlates with reduced colorectal cancer mortality. You can be confident that our physicians are performing high-quality examinations.

Cutting Edge AI

AI-assisted colonoscopy represents the next generation of colorectal cancer screening. By using advanced artificial intelligence technology during the procedure, your physician receives real-time visual support that helps identify polyps that might otherwise be difficult to detect. This added layer of precision improves detection rates and enhances the effectiveness of colonoscopy in preventing colorectal cancer. The procedure is performed just like a standard colonoscopy, but with the benefit of cutting-edge technology working alongside your physician to deliver the most thorough and accurate screening possible.
