What is Rubber Band Ligation?

Rubber band ligation (hemorrhoid banding) is the most commonly performed procedure for symptomatic internal hemorrhoids. A small elastic band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply. The hemorrhoid shrinks and falls off within a few days. The procedure takes only a few minutes and typically requires no sedation.

Who is a Candidate?

Rubber band ligation is appropriate for patients with grade I, II, or III internal hemorrhoids that cause persistent bleeding, prolapse, or significant discomfort despite conservative management. External hemorrhoids are not treated with banding and require different approaches.

What to Expect

Most patients experience mild discomfort or a sensation of pressure for 24–48 hours after banding. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient. Most patients return to normal activities the following day. A high-fiber diet and adequate fluid intake help prevent recurrence.
